Ed Woodward is ready to pay the price required to sign Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s top defensive target for Manchester United, while Liverpool will sacrifice a popular figure to seal the signing of Thiago Alcantara, according to Monday’s Euro Paper Talk.
UPAMECANO NEXT ON MAN UTD SHOPPING LIST
Manchester United already know their next signing after Donny Van de Beek’s transfer is sealed.
The Ajax midfielder will this week sign a five-year deal at Old Trafford after the Red Devils agreed a €45m fee with Ajax.
According to ESPN, United plan to strengthen their central defence next and have targeted RB Leipzig defender Dayoy Upamecano.
The 21-year-old proved himself one of Europe’s outstanding defenders this season. He was a key man as Julian Nagelsmann’s side reached the Champions League semi-finals.
United’s chances of landing him appeared to be over last month when he signed a new deal with the Bundesliga side. That tied him to the club until 2023. More significantly, it upped his exit clause to €60m.
However, reports in Germany claim the new deal includes a release clause of €42m. That comes into affect at the end of the 2020/21 season.
As per ESPN, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer wants the deal done now after identifying Upamecano as Harry Maguire’s dream partner. As such, they claim United’s money man, Ed Woodward, will bite the bullet and will sanction the €60m (£53.7m) transfer now.
Woodward, it is said, agrees with Solskjaer’s assessment over the player. Both believe the deal still represents excellent value for money given the Frenchman’s age and reputation.
United hope to partially fund the transfer by allowing Chris Smalling, Marcos Rojo and Phil Jones to leave. Leeds United are also keen on Axel Tuanzebe and could also boost their coffers.
