A key reason how Man Utd were able to usurp Real Madrid in the hunt for Donny van de Beek has been revealed, while Liverpool ace Virgil van Dijk has offered his thoughts on the impending transfer.
A personal intervention from boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, combined with the smooth operating of Ajax CEO and former Man Utd goalkeeper Edwin Van der Sar have ensured negotiations have progressed at a rapid pace.
The Sun recently reported the player has undergone his medical back home in The Netherlands, inching the deal reported to be worth around £40m one step closer to completion.
The news will come as something of a shock to Spanish giants Real Madrid, however.
Los Blancos had seemingly been heading the race for the Dutchman earlier this year, but Sky Sports’ transfer guru Dharmesh Sheth has revealed how Man Utd were able to jump ahead in the queue.
Sheth said (via Sky Sports): “The pandemic is playing a big part in where Van de Beek is ending up.
“He was close to joining Real Madrid and was due to have a medical before the Covid pandemic struck.
“Real did not follow that up – in came Manchester United, and they’re about to get their man.”
Van Dijk makes Van de Beek admission
Van de Beek’s impending arrival will be Ajax’s second major sale to the Premier League this summer following assist king Hakim Zyech’s switch to Chelsea.
Dutch captain Van Dijk was asked about his fellow countryman joining a bitter rival in Man Utd, and admitted he made no efforts to dissuade him from joining.
“Did I try to change his mind [about joining United]? No,” he said during Netherlands’ press conference (via The MEN). “If it happens – and it looks like it – then I give him that wholeheartedly.
“Great for him, great for Dutch football, for the Dutch national team and another great club for an Oranje player.
“The same goes for Nathan Aké who has gone to Manchester City.”
