Reports across the media this evening suggest that, despite an eye-watering contract proposal from the Middle East, Mesut Ozil is continuing to insist on staying put at Arsenal this summer.

Ozil’s exit links

Speculation surrounding Gunners midfielder Ozil has reemerged in force over recent months.

On the back of another disappointing campaign, during which the 31-year-old struggled for form, fitness and game-time, rumours have inevitably cropped back up regarding a potential exit from the Emirates.

Despite Ozil having initially established himself as first-choice following the appointment of Mikel Arteta, he was subsequently frozen out following English football’s post-Covid-19 return in June, failing to take to the pitch once across Arsenal’s final 14 outings of the season.

This comes on top of the fact that the German managed a paltry return of one goal and two assists across 23 prior appearances over the course of the campaign.

Perhaps most concerning of all when it comes to Ozil’s situation at the Emirates, however, is not his form, or relationship with Mikel Arteta, but rather the German’s staggering wages.

Ozil is currently tied down to a deal which sees the former Real Madrid man net £350,000-per-week, making him Arsenal’s top earner, and by some distance.

While such a mammoth payout to a player contributing so little on the pitch would of course come as a source of concern at any given point, though, the current financial climate makes Ozil’s contract a genuinely pressing issue in north London.

Ozil stands firm

To this point, however, despite the club’s best efforts, evidently, Arsenal have been unable to move their out-of-favour midfielder on.

And, as outlined above, an update on the situation has this evening been forthcoming.

The news, though, is far from positive from a Gunners perspective.

As per the likes of Sam Dean of the Telegraph, clubs in both Saudi Arabia and Qatar are expressing an interest in luring Ozil away from the Emirates this summer.

In fact, it is even suggested that offers are on the table for the German.

Crucially, however, it is added that, at this time, Ozil remains intent on seeing out the final year of his Arsenal contract, with ‘no intention’ on the part of the former Schalke man to move on:

Reports stemming from Turkey, meanwhile, go a step further, via an insight into the staggering figures reportedly being offered to the veteran midfielder to swap England for the middle East.

As per Fanatik, Saudi outfit Al Nassr’s proposed contract to Ozil is worth almost €17 million-pear-year:
