Kia Joorabchian has revealed that Willian joined Arsenal because of the “incredible” project Mikel Arteta is building.
Willian moved across London to join Arsenal in the summer after his release by Chelsea. He had spent seven years at Stamford Bridge.
The Brazilian winger had been open to staying with the Blues. However, they were unwilling to offer him a three-year contract.
That was a key factor for Willian, so he ended up moving to Arsenal instead. They did offer him the terms he desired, worth £220,000-per-week.
But now, his agent Joorabchian has denied that the length of the contract was the sole reason Willian chose Arsenal.
“With Willian, there’s no secret he wanted a three-year contract, but the Mikel Arteta project was just incredible,” Joorabchian told talkSPORT.
“He was very much wooed by Mikel and [technical director] Edu, and what Mikel presented to him and the way he wants to play football, the way he wants to continue and the success he wants to bring to Arsenal, made the difference.
“That’s what he said and that’s exactly what it was.”
Arteta has already won the FA Cup and Community Shield in his short time as Arsenal manager. The former midfielder took over in December and has inspired a turnaround in fortunes at the Emirates Stadium.
Arteta confident Willian will make a difference
When Arsenal announced Willian’s signing last month, Arteta revealed how the 31-year-old would transform them.
“I believe he’s a player that can really make a difference for us,” Arteta told Arsenal’s official website.
“We have been monitoring him for the past few months, we had a clear intention to strengthen in the attacking midfielder and the winger positions [and] he is a player that gives us a lot of versatility, he can play in three or four different positions.
“He has the experience of everything in the football world but to still have the ambition to come here and contribute to bring the club where it belongs.
“I have been really impressed with all the talks I have had with him and how much he wanted to come.”
