In-demand centre-back Ben White has disappointed a host of suitors by signing a new four-year contract with Brighton.
White was Leeds’ initial top target in the hunt for a new defender, having watched him impress on loan last season. The 22-year-old appeared in all 46 Championship games as Marcelo Bielsa’s men achieved promotion.
Leeds have already had three bids rejected and chief executive Angus Kinnear admitted that a deal would be hard to strike given Brighton’s reluctance to sell.
And after seeing three bids rejected, the last being for £25m, Leeds turned their attention elsewhere.
A clutch of other Premier League clubs had also been closely monitoring White’s situation, including Chelsea.
But boss Graham Potter has long since insisted Brighton want to integrate him into their top-flight plans this term.
White has signed improved terms at the Amex Stadium running until 2024, and with it, gets a promise from Potter to show what he can do in the Premier League.
The Seagulls boss was clearly delighted to secure the talented defender’s long-term future.
“I have been looking forward to working with Ben for a long time. He was a player I was well aware of, even before I came to the club,” said Potter.
“He’s gradually stepped up the EFL divisions, with Newport, Peterborough and Leeds.
“He had a brilliant season helping Leeds to the title last season. Now he has the opportunity to show his qualities in the Premier League.
“We are delighted to have agreed a new long-term contract with him, and I am sure our supporters will be looking forward to watching him play for the club.”
Leeds talks progress over Rodrigo de Paul
Leeds United are reported to be nudging ever closer to a club-record deal to sign Rodrigo de Paul.
The Whites are preparing for their return to the Premier League after a 16-year absence.
Rodrigo Moreno and Robin Koch have arrived at Elland Road over the weekend, as Leeds strengthen their squad.
Now, they have turned their attention to another high-profile player. According to Mike McGrath of the Telegraph, transfer expert Fabrizio Romano and Phil Hay of The Athletic, Leeds are strongly considering a move for De Paul.
De Paul has been a consistent performer for Udinese over the past four seasons, becoming their vice-captain. However, he could call time on his spell in Serie A this summer.
As per sources in Italy, Leeds officials held talks with Udinese owner Gino Pozzo over the weekend.
Now, reports claims United’s director of football Victor Orta has agreed personal terms with the player over a move to Elland Road.
