Premier League giants Chelsea could be set for an imminent cash injection, as Stade Rennais step up their pursuit of former Blues starlet Jeremie Boga.

Sassuolo stint

23-year-old Boga is a product of Chelsea’s youth system.

However, on the back of a series of loan spells away from London over the course of the early years of his fledgling professional career, it was decided in the summer of 2018 that Boga was not ready to make the cut at Stamford Bridge, resulting in his permanent sale.

The Ivorian talent made the move to Serie A outfit Sassuolo, for a fee in the region of £3.5 million.

And, after a somewhat hit-and-miss debut season in Italy, Boga has since gone on to establish himself as one of the Neroverdi’s star men.

A string of standout displays in 2019/20 saw the gifted wide-man finally begin to fulfill his unquestionable potential

All told, across the recently completed campaign, Boga racked up 11 goals and 4 assists in 34 league appearances.

This haul included a sumptuous dink over Gigi Buffon during a meeting with Serie A champions Juventus in Turin back in December:

Chelsea thank Rennes?

Boga’s fine form, though, has not gone at all unnoticed across Europe.

The likes of Barcelona, Tottenham, Borussia Dortmund, Valencia and Napoli have all previously been named as keen admirers of the 23-year-old.

It is the interest of Boga’s latest suitors, though, which could well result in Chelsea securing a welcome windfall to add to the club’s sizable summer transfer warchest.

As part of the agreement which saw their former talent make the move to Sassuolo, the Blues secured a sell-on clause, thought to be worth somewhere in the region of 10 to 15 per cent.

A considerable offer, meanwhile, is now widely reported to have been forthcoming for Boga, from Ligue 1 outfit Rennes.

Julien Stephan’s men are said to have tabled a proposal worth €20 million plus add-ons to Sassuolo.

The Neroverdi, for their part, are hopeful of bagging a fee closer to €30 million, though.

Either way, there is optimism that a deal will eventually be struck, with the shrewd work of Marina Granovskaia and co. at Stamford Bridge set to see Chelsea reap the benefits.
