Manchester United defender Chris Smalling has reportedly turned down offers from the Premier League this summer.

Smalling spent last season on loan with Roma and the former England man was a huge success in Serie A.

The centre-back made 30 Serie A appearances and his displays were noted by Premier League suitors.

A report on 90min has claimed that Newcastle, Everton, West Ham and Fulham have all shown an interest in signing the 30-year-old.

But Italian outlet Corriere dello Sport are suggesting on Tuesday that Smalling has “refused other offers received from the Premier League because he is waiting for Roma”.

It is reported that Smalling would like to return to Roma, whether that be on loan or permanently.

However, United are reluctant to loan him out again and, so far, have been unable to reach an agreement with Roma over a transfer fee.

United are believed to be holding out for €20m for the experienced defender.

Roma have lodged an offer of around €14m for Smalling, but United are standing firm.

The Italian source, via Sport Witness, though claim that with Smalling “pushing” for a return to the Italian capital “an agreement will be found halfway” and “in a few days everything will be clearer”.

Gazzetta dello Sport also state Paulo Fonseca “would like to spend no more than €17m, including bonuses” on Smalling, whose contract at Old Trafford expires in 2022.

Roma are also close to banking around €30m, including bonuses for Patrik Schick, who is set to sign for Bayer Leverkusen.
