Manchester United are waiting for Jadon Sancho to make a public statement confirming he is staying at Borussia Dortmund before abandoning their efforts to sign him.
That’s according to The Sun, who claim that United have not given up on signing their top summer target.
Sancho emerged as a priority for United at the start of the transfer window. However, they were unable to agree a deal with Dortmund before the Bundesliga club’s pre-season schedule began.
That was the deadline by which Dortmund wanted to resolve Sancho’s future. Regardless, United have kept pushing to sign Sancho before the transfer window closes in October.
So far, they have found it difficult to match Dortmund’s demands for an up-front fee for Sancho. The German giants want a hefty sum to be paid immediately, whereas United prefer to structure the deal with add-ons to be paid at a later date.
But despite their virtual deadline passing, Man Utd are still chasing Sancho. And The Sun claim they will only give up once Sancho has stated in public that he is staying at Dortmund.
So far, the only word from Sancho about his future has been that he is trying not to let the transfer speculation distract him.
Therefore, if Sancho wants to return to the Premier League – where he previously was on the books at Manchester City, without making a senior appearance – he will have to push for the transfer himself.
The report adds that he had a basic agreement for personal terms with United – although TEAMtalk sources have suggested otherwise. However, the Red Devils have had to switch their focus elsewhere, and are nearing a deal for Ajax midfielder Donny Van De Beek.
Man Utd still want more forwards
Ole Gunnar Solskjaer still wants to strengthen his attack, though, so could return for Sancho. The United manager knows he will need depth if they are to compete in multiple tournaments next season, having lost in three semi-finals in 2019-20.
And confidence remains that they will be able to sign Sancho by the end of the window, according to one transfer expert.
United are in the unique position of being the only suitor for Sancho in a summer in which football finances have changed. And Ian McGarry told the Transfer Window Podcast recently that all parties believe a deal can still be done.
However, another journalist has warned them that time is running out if they want to sign him.
