Greenwood & Foden break Covid-19 protocols

The headline news in England on Monday, of course, involved two of the countries’ rising stars.

Both Mason Greenwood and Phil Foden were handed their first senior call-ups for the Three Lions’ latest round of games.

England would play Iceland on Saturday with Foden starting and Greenwood making an appearance off the bench.

The tie saw England emerge with a 1-0 victory after a rather dull 90 minutes.

It would be events after the Iceland game which would cause quite a stir though.

It was first reported on Monday morning that Foden and Greenwood were alleged to have snuck two women into the team’s hotel, actions which, of course, broke Covid-19 protocols.

Greenwood’s apology

Unsurprisingly, it was confirmed shortly after that both Greenwood and Foden would not travel with the rest of the England squad to face Denmark on Tuesday:

After being removed from international duty, Foden took to his Twitter account to issue an apology on Monday evening.

Now, on Tuesday, Greenwood has, via Manchester United, released an apology of his own, which you can read in full below:

“Having now had the chance to reflect on what’s happened, I can only apologise to everyone for the embarrassment I have caused.

“It was irresponsible of me to break the COVID-19 protocols which are in place to protect players, staff and the public.

“In particular, I want to apologise to Gareth Southgate, for letting him down, when he had shown great trust in me.

“Playing for England was one of the proudest moments in my life and I only have myself to blame for this huge mistake.

“I promise my family, the fans, Manchester United and England that this is a lesson I will learn from.”
