Manchester United have been dealt a blow in their reported pursuit of Dayot Upamecano.
Man United linked with Upamecano
Upamecano, 21, has emerged as one of German football’s standout centre-backs over the last couple of seasons.
All told, the Frenchman has garnered 113 appearances across all competitions for Leipzig, including a number of impressive displays in the Champions League.
Such commanding performances despite his tender years, meanwhile, have understandably piqued the interest of several top clubs.
All of Arsenal, Chelsea, Manchester City, Manchester United and Bayern Munich have previously been named as parties interested in the stopper.
Of all those top sides, it appears to be Man United who have maintained a strong interest in him.
ESPN claimed late last month, that Ole Gunnar Solskjaer was targeting the centre-half to bolster his defensive options and partner Harry Maguire.
Upamecano staying put
The above-linked report also added that Upamecano’s current deal will have a €42m release clause in it, though it will not be active till next summer.
Despite this, the Man United boss was still understood to want to recruit the Frenchman in this window.
However, any hopes the Red Devils harboured of landing Upamecano this summer appear to have been dashed.
Speaking in a recent interview, Julian Nagelsmann was drawn on the future of his star centre-back.
And though the German admitted Upamecano could depart the Red Bull Arena next season, Nagelsmann is ‘sure’ the defender will be there for the 2020/21 campaign:
“He [Upamecano] will be here for the season. I’m sure about that.
“As for the future, I’m not sure as he is very talented. Lots of clubs will want to buy – next season it could be real that he leaves the club. But this season he will stay.”
