Donny van de Beek will allow Manchester United boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer to play on the front foot more often in games, according to one pundit.

The former Ajax midfielder is United’s first major signing this transfer window, after talks to sign Jadon Sancho slowed.

United announced the signing of the Dutchman on Wednesday to further bolster their options.

Van de Beek joins the likes of Bruno Fernandes, Paul Pogba and Scott McTominay in fighting for game time, with Fred and Nemanja Matic also options for Solskjaer in the upcoming season.

Speaking to Sky Sports, former United goalkeeper Mark Bosnich insisted that Solskjaer was right not to pass up on the opportunity to sign Van de Beek, despite Fernandes adding mettle to the midfield in January.

“I know there are not many [signings] in, but it’s not through lack of trying.

“There are rumours flying about that they might get another centre-back in as well before the start of the season. The Van de Beek signing is absolutely fantastic. He is truly a quality midfielder.

“A lot of people are saying ‘we’ve got so many midfielders’, but you can’t have enough in terms of quality options if you want to challenge on four fronts – which is exactly what they want to do.”

Bosnich added that Van de Beek will provide an extra attacking dimension to United next season.

Fernandes’ arrival has already allowed forwards Marcus Rashford, Anthony Martial and Mason Greenwood to flourish.

Bosnich added: “It also gives Ole Gunnar Solskjaer a lot of options of how to play his team. Remember last season some of his best results came in games against the bigger clubs, like against Manchester City and Chelsea.

“In those games he was relying on being on the counter attack a little bit because of the personnel that he had but with Van de Beek and some of the others that they have signed, he can change the way of playing and be on the front foot – which is what Manchester United are used to.

“Ole Gunnar Solskjaer was used to that as a player and the fans are accustomed to it.

“Jadon Sancho is obviously one that has got away – he might still sign, we don’t know about that – but it’s still been a good transfer window, in my opinion.”

United begin their Premier League campaign later than most other teams, due to their recent Europa League participation.
