Unrealistic targets?

PSG’s lack of transfer activity has frustrated head coach Thomas Tuchel.

The German coach did not hide his frustrations and spoke about how the teams competing for the Champions League have all strengthened.

“For example we look at Liverpool, they were not in Portugal at all and they have now signed Thiago and another player from Wolves,” Tuchel said, referencing Diogo Jota.

“Man City have signed some defenders after losing in the quarter-finals. Atletico now have Luis Suarez, Inter Milan were not in Portugal but they now have two teams in their squad able to compete in the Champions League.”

The 47-year-old coach who guided PSG to the Champions League final last season spoke about the expectations on him. Further to that, he suggested the targets should be more lenient because of a lack of activity.

“If we stay like this maybe we can’t ask for the same targets with a reduced squad because as I said we have to cope with Liverpool, Man City, Atletico and Inter who have done well in the window. The club knows which profile we need in terms of new recruits. Now we have to wait.”

PSG have spent over £50 million making Mauro Icardi’s move from Inter Milan permanent and signing Sergio Rico from Sevilla.

Leonardo hits back

Sporting Director Leonardo did not take kindly to Tuchel’s public address of a lack of transfer activity. The Brazilian spoke to media about the German’s comments and even hinted his position could be in danger.

“I did not like the statement of the coach Tuchel. I don’t understand it and I did not like it. The club did not like it. We will see internally,” the 51-year-old said.

“If someone is not happy, we can talk, there is no problem. But If he decides to stay, he must decide to respect the choices of the sports management.”

Leonardo did speak on the possibility of incomings at the capital but was not hopeful.

“We will try to do things. We will see but there is nothing for sure.”

Lyon play Nimes on the 18th before facing Manchester United in the Champions League.
