Medical complete

Images have surfaced revealing that Lucas Torreira has completed his medical in Madrid ahead of a loan move to Atletico Madrid.

Atleti are reportedly still in need of offloading a player, likely Hector Herrera or Thomas Lemar, before they can confirm the Uruguayan’s arrival.

Torreira returned to Arsenal after an injury with Mikel Arteta in charge and a midfield partnership of Granit Xhaka and Dani Ceballos solidified.

Moving into 2020/21, Mohammed Elneny has returned on loan and been preferred by Arteta again to the Uruguayan. Ceballos has also rejoined the Gunners making game time even harder to come by.

The move to Atletico will not guarantee more minutes, however. Thomas Partey and Saul Niguez are an established partnership but with depth lacking, the Uruguayan has a chance to play.

Partey starts

Arsenal may have been hoping to see a possible easing in Atleti’s resistance to the Gunners’ approach for Partey with Torreira arriving but that has not been the case.

Diego Simeone has selected the Ghana international ahead of the Rojiblancos’ fixture against Villarreal.

This has little impact on whether Partey will stay. The midfielder has a £45 million release clause and if Partey agrees to move any bid of that level would be impossible to reject.

Atletico will be hoping to bounce back after their disappointing 0-0 draw away at Huesca.
