Tottenham boss Jose Mourinho admits that striker Carlos Vinicius finds himself in a “difficult” situation with Harry Kane in such fantastic form.

Kane has netted 13 goals and provided 10 assists in only 14 games this season. Indeed, in doing so, he has formed a deadly partnership with Son Heung-min that has accounted for Spurs’ recent form.

But Mourinho made clear his desire to find support for Kane in the recent transfer window, hence Vinicius’ arrival. The 25-year-old is on a loan spell from Benfica that features Spurs’ option to buy.

The Portuguese has struggled to find game time, making only five appearances. But Mourinho insists that the striker could yet form his own partnership with Kane to get minutes.

“Vinicius will play many times, he will have the opportunity to prove himself in the Premier League and to convince Tottenham to buy him,” the coach told Sportv (via Sport Witness).

“If not, he’ll return to Benfica much richer and much more accomplished. This operation is good for all three parties.

“We have two strikers. We don’t have three, four or five. And he’s one of the two. The other is one of the three best strikers in the world and that creates a difficult situation for him.

“But you can play the two together, there are games where they’ll do it. Alternation is important because Harry cannot do all the games.”

Vinicius gave Mourinho a glimpse of his talent in his Spurs debut in the Europa League. The forward laid on two assists as Tottenham beat LASK 3-0 in October.

As well as Kane, Son and Vinicius, Mourinho can count on Gareth Bale, Steven Bergwijn and Lucas Moura in attack.

Such potential up top has caused talk of a Tottenham title challenge to surface.

Liverpool legend John Barnes, though, has insisted that Mourinho’s men always remain “a game away from disaster”.
