Exit-bound Manchester United chief Ed Woodward’s final major decision at the club will be to choose his successor, a report claims.

United announced the executive vice-chairman’s resignation on Tuesday, amid the European Super League chaos. The 49-year-old was likely to leave soon, but brought his departure date forward to the end of 2021. As such, his 16-year association with the Red Devils, which began with helping the Glazer family’s takeover, will end.

Nevertheless, he still wields considerable power at Old Trafford and will do so before he leaves for good.

Indeed, the Manchester Evening News claims that he has one more big decision to make in his tenure.

Woodward will get to choose his successor as chief executive, with the last three appointments coming internally.

Woodward himself, David Gill and Peter Kenyon have all held the role, but there is now room for someone new.

The newspaper does not speculate as to who could step into the role. However, the decision will be Woodward‘s last ‘major’ call.

As for the reaction to his impending exit, club staff reportedly feel ‘gutted’ that Woodward is leaving.

Furthermore, they felt ‘shocked’ at the timing of the announcement of his resignation.

However, the Man Utd chief has supposedly told close circles that he ‘underestimated’ the furore over the Super League plan and admits he made a mistake.

Despite this, previous reports claim that Woodward always had ‘serious misgivings’ about the proposed competition.

While he was in favour of European football reform, he did not approve of the lack of relegation and other parts of the ESL.

However, he regretted not speaking up more strongly about his concerns.

What’s more, a fresh report from The Guardian has claimed that Woodward only became aware of the ESL’s launch a day before its announcement.

He was also not part of the decision-making process which led to the bombshell statements on Sunday evening.

On the pitch, meanwhile, United return to action when facing Leeds at Elland Road on Sunday.
